Domestic Gas Training Course

This training programme has been developed to meet the needs of industry and in compliance with IGEM/IG/1 Standards of Training in Gas Work and The Gas Training Specification. This document sets out the rules for those wishing to enroll on the scheme and those providing the necessary on-job supervised training/mentoring and observation, which is a fundamental part of this training programme. The programme is structured so as to ensure adequate learning is undertaken in a classroom environment before the candidate begins collecting work based evidence the classroom-based activity will include structured learning which will be underpinned with relevant assessments both practical and written to demonstrate both understanding and application of knowledge in each key area of gas safety and/or related activities such as safe isolation, basic health, and safety etc. After successful completion of Initial ACS assessment, Candidates can register with Gas Safe Register.

Note: For those wishing to work solely on LPG installations we also offer a core LPG gas assessment.

Course structure

Course is divided into different modules.

Stage 1.

Fundamental of Gas - Domestic Natural Gas is divided into 14 modules. Stage one training is delivered in centre (theory, practical and online supported) and home study required.

Stage 2:

Candidate need to complete the “On the Job” work experience under direct supervision of their Gas Safe registered Company/Engineer and Duration to complete the portfolio depends on the candidates own experience. On the job portfolio service is available at an additional price if required. Upon successful completion of Fundamental Gas Training- Domestic, including necessary work Portfolio, Candidate can apply for Stage 3 Initial ACS assessment.

Stage 3:

ACS Domestic Core Gas Safety CCN1 and required appliances assessment (Initial) training. ACS Initial CCN1 & appliance training is offered only after successful completion of Domestic Gas Safety Training under Managed Learning Programme.

  • Basic Maths,
  • Safe Isolation,
  • Identification and Operations of Gas safety devices and Controls,
  • Relevant Gas pressures and Gas rating.
  • Tightness testing and purging including low and medium pressure,
  • Ventilation,
  • Gas pipe work design, installation and fittings,
  • Chimney / flue design, recognition and testing (flue flow test, Spillage test etc.),
  • Re-establish existing Gas supply and relight procedures,
  • Heating Controls S & Y plans (optional),
  • Installation, servicing, maintenance and fault finding of central heating boilers, water heaters, cookers and gas fires.
  • No formal qualification required for this course but in plumbing, heating or gas industry experience is beneficial to candidate. Those candidates completed "Plumbing Training for new gas installers" with us can enrol on this "Domestic Gas Installer" Course, for time exemptions or for further detail please ask to the member of staff.
Achievement on completion
At successful completion Candidate will gain a Asbestos awareness, Manual Handling, Basic fire safety awareness, working at height and AdSkills' Fundamental Gas Domestic Certificate and candidate is now eligible to enrol on ACS Domestic Core Gas Safety CCN1 and required appliances i.e. CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1, MET1 etc. Appliance assessments are subject to on the job work experience. After successful completion of ACS initial assessment, candidates are eligible to register with GAS SAFE REGISTER.
